Effective date: June 30, 2026
Splitzy is a simple way to split costs with the people you share life with — friends, roommates, a partner. We track who paid for what and who's coming back to whom, so nobody has to keep a mental ledger. We take the same care with your information that we try to bring to the rest of the app: only what we need, clearly explained, never more than necessary.
This policy explains what we collect, why, who else sees it, and the choices you have. It reflects our obligations under Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (Law 25) and Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
Splitzy is not a payment processor. No money ever moves through the app. We record who owes whom; you settle up between yourselves (for example, by Interac e-Transfer). We never touch, hold, or transfer funds.
Splitzy is operated by an independent developer based in Quebec, Canada. You can reach our Privacy Officer with any question, request, or concern — including to access, correct, or delete your information — at privacy@split-zy.com.
Account & identity. Your email address (to sign you in and identify your account); a user ID we assign you, and — if you sign in with Google — the identity Google returns to authenticate you; a display name / nickname (and optionally first and last name); and, if you use Google sign-in, your Google profile photo. This lets us create and secure your account and label expenses with who paid and who owes.
Your shared-expense activity (financial information). Expense descriptions, amounts, currencies, dates, and categories; how a cost is split and the resulting who-owes-whom balances; itemized line items; recurring-expense settings; the exchange rate snapshotted on a multi-currency expense; and settle-up records (entries marking that one person paid another — records only; no money moves through Splitzy).
Groups & membership. Group names and currency, membership records, join-approval and personal archive settings, pending join requests, and a per-group secret invite token that powers invite links.
Interac e-Transfer handle (optional). If you choose, you can add an Interac contact (an email or phone number) and share it within a group so members know where to send you an e-Transfer when settling up. It's opt-in per group, and Splitzy still never moves the money.
Receipt scans (optional). When you snap a receipt to auto-itemize an expense, the photo is sent for optical character recognition (OCR) to read the merchant, date, line items, and totals; we also store the merchant name and the store address printed on the receipt alongside the expense. The receipt image is never stored by Splitzy — it's sent only transiently for reading and then discarded on our side. The OCR providers that read it (Section 5) process it under their own terms.
Settings & preferences. Your language, whether you've seen the onboarding tour, your home currency, and your per-group sharing/approval toggles.
Receipt-scan quality telemetry (optional). To improve scanning and limit abuse, we store non-content signals about each scan (your user ID, confidence/coverage/model flags, coarse image dimensions, and a coarse device class). This explicitly stores no image, no item text, no merchant name, and no amounts.
Crash diagnostics (optional, off by default). If error monitoring is enabled (it is off in the current release), the app may send scrubbed error events to an error-monitoring service, with personal and financial details stripped before sending and your identity and IP dropped.
To authenticate you and keep your account secure; run the core service (groups, expenses, splits, balances, settle-ups, multi-currency conversion, recurring expenses); read receipts you choose to scan; show shared information to the right people in your groups; remember your preferences; improve scan quality and prevent abuse; and diagnose crashes (only if enabled, with the scrubbing above). We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
We use third-party service providers to operate Splitzy, and share your data with them only for the purposes below. Some of them process data on servers located outside Quebec and Canada, including in the United States (see Section 6).
If you choose Sign in with Google, you authenticate directly with Google, which returns your sign-in identity to us; we do not send Google your expense or receipt data.
The specific providers we use are available on request from our Privacy Officer. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not otherwise disclose it except where required by law.
Splitzy relies on cloud providers whose servers may be located outside Quebec and Canada, including in the United States. Your personal information — including financial activity and receipt content sent for scanning — may be processed and stored outside your province and country, where different laws may apply. By using Splitzy and choosing to scan a receipt, you consent to this processing. We limit what each provider receives to what its function requires.
We keep your account, group, expense, and profile information for as long as your account is active and your shared history needs to remain computable for the people you split with. When you delete an expense or group, or leave/archive a group, Splitzy generally performs a soft delete — hiding the item while retaining the underlying record so balances stay correct for other members. Archiving or leaving a group is not deletion. If you want your data genuinely erased rather than hidden, use the process in Section 9.
Under Quebec Law 25 and PIPEDA you have the right to access, correct or update, and delete your personal information, to withdraw consent, to know how your information is used and shared, and to complain to our Privacy Officer and to the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Editing in the app: you can update your display name and profile details, change your password, switch language, and sign out from your settings at any time.
Deleting your account: email privacy@split-zy.com from the address on your account, or follow the steps at splitzy1.vercel.app/delete-account.html. We verify your request, delete your account and erase the personal information associated with it, and confirm when it's done — within 30 days (usually sooner). Because some records are shared with other group members, we may retain or anonymize the minimum necessary to keep their history coherent, and we'll tell you if that applies.
Splitzy is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact our Privacy Officer and we will delete it.
We may update this policy as the app evolves or the law requires. When we make a material change, we'll update the effective date above and, where appropriate, let you know in the app.
